Iridology is the study of the iris, or colored part, of the eye.
The iris structure has detailed fibers and pigmentation that reflects information about our physical and psychological makeup. It identifies inherited dispositions (how our body reacts to our environment and what symptoms are most likely to occur), risks (what areas or organ systems are more likely to have symptoms) and future challenges (where we are likely to have more problems as we age).

European and American Iridology Models

Historical Background

Modern Iridology originated in Europe. Most natural medicine was stymied in the United States by a changing political and economic climate during the time Dr. Jensen held the light for iridology in America very much on his own.

While Dr. Jensen was practicing and teaching iridology in the United States, German doctors and researchers from the 1930’s through the 1950’s continued to clinically study beliefs about the iris and identify which were consistent and reproducible. They validated their studies with laboratory tests,   x-rays and autopsy assessment analysis.

Many Iridologists in America became solely invested in the American model because there was no easy access to the German and other European findings, which for the most part were not translated in to English until the 1980’s.

American Model
The American model analyzes iris signs, which include:
• lesions (openings in the iris tissue), drug spots, or psora (specific pigmentation) or overall coloration around the digestive or bowel area
• depth of lesions, in which greater depth indicates a more chronic or degenerative condition
• healing lines in the lesions that indicate the lesion holes are closing up and healing
• color changes which indicate that toxins have been eliminated

Herbs or nutrients are recommended for each area of the body where an iris sign appears.

European Model
The European model analyzes iris signs that include:
• overall physical integrity as a measure of resistance to negative influences (iris stroma density and shading)
• constitutional types and subtypes (the overall coloration and structural signs)
• overall pigmentation patterns, then specific structural and pigmentation signs according to appearance and the location on the chart
• reflexive and transversal signs (aberrant singular or groups of vessels-important markers for inflammation, irrigation, and precancerous conditions), which are not taught in American iridology

The European model provides a constitutional framework that is based on inherent iris signs that have been clinically researched and verified for the pathology that may potentially occur if preventative measures are not taken.

The constitutional approach assists both the Iridologist and client to understand how health challenges can develop and can be prevented by providing a cohesive understanding of the decline of health, the key issues and the organs that need to be supported first.

The goal for iridology is to break from disease orientation and to address each individual’s search for personal growth, well-being and transpersonal assessment.

Applied Iridlogy

Applied Iridology seeks to understand all the aspects that can affect the client’s health and emotional well-being.

Applied Iridology uses 80% European Iridology and 20% American Iridology along with the Time Risk model developed by Dr. Daniele Lo Rito. Applied Iridology is an approach, not a new model

It seeks to understand the unique, individual flow of internal energy resulting from the merger of physical and emotional energetic patterns. It aspires to a total integrated approach which shifts from reading of eyes from a purely diagnostic realm into the integration of the emotional and physical realms of:

• Therapeutic counseling
• Biological counseling of diet, herbs, bodywork, etc.

The vision of Applied Iridology is to break from disease orientation and to address each individual’s search for personal growth, well-being and transpersonal assessment
